Ballet is defined as theatrical work or entertainment in which a choreographer has expressed his ideas in group and solo dancing to a musical accompaniment with appropriate costumes, scenery and lighting. The traditional style of ballet, which stresses the academic technique developed through the centuries of the existence of ballet. A ballet in which the style and structure adhere to the definite framework established in the nineteenth century. Examples of classical ballets are Coppélia, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcrackerand Swan Lake.
A form of contemporary theatrical and concert dance employing a special technique for developing the use of the entire body in movements expressive of abstract ideas.
Jazz dance is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. Before the 1950s, jazz dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American vernacular dance. In the 1950s, a new genre of jazz dance—modern jazz dance—emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Every individual style of jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two distinct origins.
Hip-hop dance refers to dancestyles primarily danced to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part ofhip-hop culture. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking,locking, and popping which were developed in the 1970s by Black andLatino Americans. These three elements—freestyling, battles, and ciphers—are key components of hip-hop dance
Clogging is a type of folk dance with roots in traditional European dancing, early African-American dance,[1] and traditionalCherokee dance in which the dancer's footwear is used musically by striking the heel, the toe, or both in unison against a floor or each other to create audible percussive rhythms. The dance has fused with similar dances such as the peruvian dance "zapateo" (which may in itself be a derivate of very early european clog dances), this resulted in the birth of newer street dances, such as tap,locking, jump, stomping and the nordic track dance. The use of clogs is rarer in the more modern dances since clog shoes seem no longer to be a fashion in urban society (of which most dances are now evolving from). Clogging in its main form is often considered the first dance to be classed as a street dance, this is since it evolved in urban environments during the industrial revolution due to urbanization. Clogging was social dance in theAppalachian Mountains as early as the 18th century.
Pointe is a form of ballet, worn with specific pointe shoes. A pointe shoe is a type of shoe worn by ballet dancers when performingpointework. Pointe shoes are developed from the desire for dancers to appear weightless and sylph-like and have evolved to enable dancers to dance on the tips of their toes (i.e., en pointe) for extended periods of time. They are normally worn by female dancers, though male dancers may wear them for unorthodox roles such as the ugly stepsisters in Cinderella, Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, or men performing as women in dance companies such as Les Ballets Trockadero and Grandiva. They are manufactured in a variety of colors, most commonly in shades of light pink.
Ballroom dance refers to a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitivelyaround the world. Because of itsperformance and entertainmentaspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, andtelevision. Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest, to almost any type of social dancing as recreation. However, with the emergence of dancesport in modern times, the term has become narrower in scope. It usually refers to the International Standard and International Latin style dances.
Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using ones shoes, as well as the floor, as a percussive instrument. As such, it is also commonly considered to be a musical form as well. Two major variations on tap dance exist, rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the dance side, and is widely performed as a part of musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses instead on the musical side, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the Jazz tradition.
Breakdancing: Acrobatic dancing to music: an acrobatic style of solo dancing to rap music, typically involving spinning of the body on the ground. Pop & Lock: A style of breakdancing which involves short, rapid movement of the arms and legs (popping), combined with brief pauses between movements. Sometimes accompanied with subtle foot movements known as ‘gliding’ in which the breaker appears to move around the floor without using/lifting their legs.
